They say that a person knows from an early age what they are destined
to do in life. I am no exception as artwork and horses have been a
large part of my life. I think the first real drawing I ever did was a
picture of a white mare and foal sometime around the age of four and I
have never looked back. My mother was a trained professional artist and
she made sure that our large family of eight siblings had plenty of art
supplies to keep us busy. She taught us basic composition, color use
and many other techniques. Horses were always a natural art subject for
me as a frequent visitor to my great grandmother's farm. There, I was
fascinated by the big team horses that were still used to work the farm
fields, even though this was the 50's and the age of mechanization.
Because they also raised Herefords, riding horses were needed to work the
stock and these were mustangs from the Dakotas. Watching how these
horses were handled, gentled and then riding them was a tremendous
experience for a young horse crazy girl! I trained my first AQHA champion when I
was 16, and over the next 20 years, I owned, rode and showed Quarter Horses,
Arabs, Saddlebreds, and Shetland ponies. I showed in all kinds of classes from
Saddleseat to Reining and many, many western events. I also rode Hunt Seat,
competing in jumping, third level Dressage, and Eventing at the preliminary level.
A horse I trained went to the 1984
Olympic Gran Prix jumping team for Canada. I trained professionally,
taught riding and held a few judges' cards to boot.
During this time, my art continued to grow as I educated myself in
drawing and painting. I kept sculpting and found my favorite medium in
the classic beauty of bronze. Today, my subject matter is right in the
backyard where we own and raise our own riding horses. Because I have so
much experience in the horse world, my art has credibility and horsemen
know my heart and expertise is in every piece.
I attended the University of Minnesota and studied Veterinary medicine
for two years. The anatomy I learned there is invaluable in attaining
reality in my artwork. I also studied art at the Minneapolis College of
Art and Design and the Minnesota Center of Arts and Education. I take
ongoing classes to keep fresh and current through the Scottsdale Artists
School and other fine teaching venues. Some of my teachers include
noted sculptors Lincoln Fox and Bruno Luchesi.
